3 slogans for Burgerstop

Refuel with Burgerstop
With this slogan I am aiming at Burgerstop having a race car, raceway theme. For example, Burgerstop could be the town's pitstop for delicious, filling food. This slogan makes the customer believe that  Burgerstop's burgers are filling and give the consumer healthy energy.
Burgerstop: Town's top burger shop
This slogan is catchy because of the multiple rhymes. The slogan also makes the customer believe that Burgerstop is the town's "go-to" burger and fastfood joint. Because Burgerstop is the town's top and "go-to" burger place, also makes the customer believe that Burgerstop has the town's best burgers.
Burgerstop's burgers make your mouth pop
This slogan is also catchy because it ryhmes. This slogan makes the customer believe that Burgerstop's burgers are truly delicious. When the word, pop, is tied to Burgerstop's burgers, suggests that one's mouth bursts with numerous, savory flavors, which is what customers look for in food and more specifically, burgers. This slogan also suggests that Burgerstop makes no ordinary burgers.

4 Types of Ad Campaigns That Sell

The James Group sells their service by informing the customer on aspects of good advertising and the concepts on which they base their development of successful advertising. The James Group informs the customer of their concepts of advertising by saying up front, in the first paragraph, the four basic concepts that they believe yield successful advertising. These advertising concepts that the James Group identifies with and that they believe all advertising should have at least one of are, “a word hook,” “a character hook,” “a repeatable theme,” and “a consistent brand layout.” The James Group is basically selling these concepts through this essay to attract customers into wanting to invest in their methodology. This is the James Group’s way of advertising. These concepts are the values they attach to their brand. It is interesting to note that the James Group stresses the importance of including one of these concepts into an advertising campaign in order to succeed, but, how does the James Group take their own advice and apply it to their own advertisement, this essay? I ask this because, in this essay, which is a way of advertising the James Group’s service, I don’t see a “a word hook,” “a character hook,” “a repeatable theme,” or “a consistent brand layout.”

Jif Peanut Butter Commerical 2009

The Jif peanut butter commercial appeals to parents who desire comfortable family life. This is because the girl makes a peanut butter sandwich for her dad because her dad is building her a tree house. Additionally, the Jif’s slogan is “Moms choose Jif.” Because this is Jif’s slogan, it proves that moms buy Jif and families eat Jif in order to have comfortable family life. With this commercial Jif claims that their peanut butter brings love for one another into the family and the ability to get along within the family. This is because the fact that the mom bought Jif made the little girl want to make a peanut butter sandwich for her dad. Because she made a peanut butter sandwich for him, it shows that she loves her dad. This commercial works because of its pathos rhetorical appeal. It makes the audience think, “Aw how cute. The girl is thinking about her dad and is appreciative of her dad’s work and the tree house he’s making for her.” It makes the audience want to buy Jif in order to bring the family together.

What I had for breakfast this morning

This morning I went to Jamba Juice at Turner Place to get a smoothie for breakfast. Most people get smoothies as a drink to go along with their meal, but I get one as my meal because they are surprisingly filling. This is good because if you drink a smoothie it is like eating a meal because of how many calories and sugar are in one. I ordered my smoothie and because a lot of people were there I had to wait because my drink number was 3743 and 3729 was just called. So as to not waste time I went upstairs to get my daily coffee. I have begun to love coffee so much that I look forward to getting it every day after my early morning classes. At Jamba Juice I wanted I peanut butter smoothie but the salesperson said they weren’t serving peanut butter smoothies because peanut butter was recalled. So I ordered an orange dream smoothie. I was good because it tasted like an orange creamsicle but it also tasted like it had artificial sweetener in it. I was also looking for something richer, which is why my first choice was a peanut butter smoothie. It is interesting that the peanut butter was recalled because we were just talking in English about where our food comes from and how industrialized food production has become which has led to an increased number recalls. The peanut butter recall that I didn’t know about but now do because I’m in college and my world has become only Blacksburg, VA, is going to make me more cautious about eating peanut butter products for now.

"Farmer in Chief"

Reworking food production to make it more green and regional is possible, even though the process will be expensive and take a long time. Despite the tremendous requirements to rework the food production industry, the benefits of a greener, healthier and localized America are worth it. The current government regulation and the large companies, like Monsanto, that have contracts with farmers are at stake. The current tax rates, government spending and the budget are also at stake because if the government undertook this project, all of what was listed previously would increase. The idea of fast, cheap, and convenient food would be exchanged for inconvenient, expensive, healthy and quality food. This is because meat processing plants and feedlots would not exist because the livestock would be moved to the fields. If livestock moved back to the fields, the sun would feed the animals instead of fossil fuels and corn that produce diseases like E. coli, resulting in green farming. But meat would also be more expensive because it would take more labor and time to grow a cow, resulting in quality meat. As a result of expensive and inconvenient food, America would become more healthy because food wouldn’t be as cheap and accessible.

Consider the Lobster

The purpose of the essay, “Consider the Lobster” is to inform readers about the truth about eating lobster and perhaps to argue against people from eating lobster because the lobster preparation can be seen as unethical. The truth about eating lobster is that it is cooked alive; live lobsters are placed in a boiling kettle and then are served to costumers at restaurants. Although you can humanely stab the lobster in the head and then boil it, not all restaurants and lobster-eaters do this. The article is interesting because it describes the pain the lobsters feel when they are boiled. Although lobsters don’t feel pain the way humans feel pain because they have a different nervous system, boiling lobsters alive is still unethical. One knows boiling lobsters alive is unethical because restaurant cooks often leave the room as the lobster is boiling in the pot because the lobsters shake the kettle in attempt to escape the hot water. This essay is similar to the documentary because they both reveal a hidden, unfortunate truth about where food that humans eat comes from. The argument that this essay poses is similar to an underlying argument that the documentary has. The documentary’s underlying argument is that chickens, cows and pigs and mistreated in and on their way to the slaughterhouses. The animals are crammed into trucks and trains and then crowded in the assembly line of the slaughter factory. These animals die stressed, just like the lobsters.

Why food matters

Food matters because it fuels our bodies. It is a necessary substance that allows humans and all living things to survive. Although food in general is very crucial, healthy food is even more so and has even a greater importance for the human body. If the human body is not given a healthy diet, it is unbalanced. If the human body is unbalanced it can’t function as well as it supposed to. What is a healthy diet, one may ask? Well a balanced diet consists of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy and protein. However there are two key words in this description: fresh and whole. Often times, people believe they are eating healthy and eating their daily serving of grains and greens when they eat canned fruits and vegetables and white pasta and bread. However, that is not the case. Canned vegetables often contain salt and give the body excess and unnecessary sodium which can be unhealthy if the body is not using it in exercise. Canned fruit often contains added sugar, which turns into carbohydrates if not used for energy in exercise. But it is not to say that canned vegetables and fruit are totally unhealthy, it is just that fresh vegetables and fruit give the body less unnecessary ingredients and more vitamins and nutrients. The body gets the maximum vital vitamins and nutrients if fresh fruits and vegetables are consumed. White pasta and bread also doesn’t contain whole grain and the vitamins and nutrients that whole grains pastas and bread contain. Not only do humans need a healthy diet, but animals need a healthy diet. Like in the documentary we watched in class, cows that are slaughtered for beef are fed only corn in the feed houses. Cows are supposed to eat grass but corn makes the cows fat faster. Additionally, cow stomachs can’t properly digest corn because corn is acid resistant and E. coli develops, which makes the beef from that cow contaminated. Therefore, healthy diets in both humans and animals are important.

You’ve Got a Friend – James Taylor

Dear Katie, We’ve been best friends for twelve years now. Even though we now attend separate colleges in different states, I know we will stay friends. I made this mix tape for you - a compilation of songs that we both listened to through the years and songs that I believe embody and describe our everlasting friendship. May these songs remind you of the good times we had together.

When we met in Mrs. Boehly’s Bears first grade class, we both instantly knew that we found a friend. After the moment we met, we were inseparable and we still remain to be. I remember spending almost every second of the day with you during the school year. During “Drop Everything And Read” time, we’d sit together on the bean bag chairs. You were probably reading an insect book while I was reading Arthur or the Berenstain Bears. Then on the way home from school on the bus we’d pretend we were flying a plane together as the bus drove down the hills. Since our houses were 500 feet away from each other, we’d immediately begin the “play date” after school. We’d play Barbies, enslave your brother and his friends to play “house,” or ride bicycles and scooters in the col-de-sac. I remember any day that we couldn’t play together, because you had a dentist appointment or because I had church choir practice, was a boring, horrible day. The days that I we couldn’t play together made me appreciate the days we could. It was just like it is now: I will appreciate the days we do get to see each other after spending countless days apart in different colleges.

Don’t Impress Me Much – Shania Twain

Although the meaning of this song has nothing to do with friendship, I thought it would be a good example of the kind of music we listened to in elementary school. It shows how your music taste did a total backflip, while I still enjoy the pop artists. I remember listening to Shania Twain at your house during our “play dates.” We’d listen to Shania songs as we’d play dress up. Most of the time you’d put on a princess or Pocahontas dress and I’d wear a poodle skirt. But sometimes I’d be goofy and wear your brother’s Batman or Spiderman costume. Then we’d make up dance moves to Shania songs with our outfits, even if I was wearing a Batman costume. We were hoping of having a neighborhood talent show. But good thing that never happened; I feel like our neighborhood friends would question our talent. As I recount the things we did together as kids, our activities seem kind of absurd, but kids can help but to be silly.

How my music is...

Starships by Nicki Minaj is one song that I have enjoyed listening to lately. It is a song that is perfect to listen to when you are feeling high on life and you are driving on a traffic-free road on a crisp, blue sky, sunny due with the windows down. When I'm in the car or anywhere I have to sing along to it. It's also a song that is on my playlist that I listen to when I go running because it is upbeat. I probably present myself poorly when other people see and hear me listening to this song because they probably think, "Wow, this girl has no taste in music." When I say that I like Nicki Minaj to others, the majority of them react negitively because they believe her music is poor quality due to the autotune. I understand their opinion, but I just think that her music would probably sound worse if it wasn't autotuned. Starships is a song that I remember brought my spirits up after I performed poorly at a swim meet. I was driving home from the pool with the windows down on a cool, clear, sunny day with my sister and after the song came on the radio I totally forgot about the meet results and started singing along with the Nicki Minaj accent. I was having fun and enjoying myself so much that my negitive thoughts diappeared for 3 minutes and 15 seconds.

5, 10, 15, 20

At five years old I only listened to the Barney theme song and children’s church songs like, “Jesus Loves Me.” My parents didn’t allow me to watch Disney movies at that age so I didn’t even get to experience the Lion King music or the Little Mermaid songs. It was only until I reached the age of ten that I was exposed to this music because I had made friends and went to school where I was influenced by other kids my age. Finally at ten, I listened to soundtracks, like Lion King and Kim Possible. I also remember listening to Nsync, Britney Spears, Shania Twain and a little bit of Avril Lavigne because this is what the kids at school were listening to. By 15 I had my own ipod and the internet and radio were easily accessible. I rode around in the car a lot to my after-school activities and so I’d listen to the radio everywhere I went. My favorite radio station to listen to in the car was also the station that aired the show, American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest. So at 15 I was main-stream and only liked and listened to the most popular songs and hit singles. But around 17 and now, I realized that the American Top 40 was not the only music out there. So I began searching for other music. When I did so my taste in music changed. I used to like rap, hip-hop and R&B when I was 15 but now I prefer artists like Jason Mraz, Andy Grammer, Train, Shane Harper and Regina Spektor.

Why Music Matters

Today music is just another form of expression. It is like writing, dance and filmmaking. It conveys feelings and moods within its lyrics and tone. But like other forms of expression, it is also used for entertainment. People listen to music to liven up their not-so-entertaining tasks of daily life. For example, people listen to music when they are driving in the car, making dinner, jogging, or writing blog posts for English class. If music wasn’t developed, life would be really quiet. There would be no mood or suspense in movies and the city streets would not have a beat. However, music evolved from being solely used in a religious setting. In the medieval period, music was used in the church to give praise to God. Native Americans used music in chants to speak to their gods. But now music is used in many aspects of life. It is now used in plays, movies, video games and advertising. But different types of music are used in each of these aspects. Plays use mainly classical music, while movies use classical as well as pop, rock, R&B, basically any music that displays the right mood the movie director is trying to portray to his audience. Video games seem to use automated music that has no words. Advertising uses jingles and simple melodies that easily sticks into customers’ minds. Classical music often has a complex array of melodies, harmonies, rhythms and octaves that balance each other, while pop and rock always have a steady beat in the background and simple chord transitions and cadences to accompany the melody that is usually sung.

Arguing against “A 9/11 remembrance, overshadowed” - Scott Reilly

“A 9/11 remembrance, overshadowed” - Scott Reilly

I believe the 9/11 remembrance was not overshadowed this year and never will be. At Virginia Tech, the students were still asked to try and take a moment of silence during the day to remember the victims of the attack. When I logged on Facebook that day and scrolled through the newsfeed, I only read “Remember 9/11” and “God Bless America” statuses. An extravagant, organized remembrance ceremony doesn’t have to be conducted every year at every memorial in order to commemorate the tragedy and the victims. Annually, as a country we only have to remember the tragedy in our hearts and pray for the victims and their families on 9/11. Reilly claims that 9/11 was overshadowed this year because there was no ceremony at the community memorial in Rockville, Maryland. But 9/11 will never be overshadowed because that memorial will always stand in the park in Rockville for people to see and remember the tragedy every day.

Warning Signs

Ever since I was a little kid, I envisioned myself being a star athlete. After I joined the swim team at age 7, that vision grew stronger. I fell in love with swimming the minute I joined swim team. The other kids on the team were a lot of fun to be with and the older kids on the team were inspiring and as a youngster I wanted to be just like them. I continued to swim and loved the sport until about junior year in high school. The increased work load, more challenging courses and the pressure of college made me stressed the entire year. By the time I got to swim practice after school I couldn’t focus on the practice because I had school work on my mind. Soon, I realized I wasn’t improving because I wasn’t doing my best in practice due to the stress. Because of my desire to do well in school also, I began to not enjoy swimming as I once did. And the only reason I began going to practice was because I knew it was healthy and because I wanted to stay in shape. But I kept swimming anyway, despite my lack of heart, because I didn’t want the possibility of me becoming a star athlete to totally disappear. By senior year, swim practice almost felt like a chore. I went because I told myself, “I have to go, my teammates need me at practice and my coach will lecture me if I don’t.” As a senior I was contemplating swimming at a DIII university called Stevens because I still wanted my dream to come true. But I knew deep down that I wasn’t going to be happy and enjoy my 4 years at college if I did swim. But trusted my gut and made the decision to come to VT because I knew swimming just wasn’t for me anymore and I’m glad I did.

Family Dinner

It is Thanksgiving Day and the odd thing is, is that my mom is not home. My dad, sister and I are going to pick her up from the airport in a few hours. Usually on this holiday my family hosts a large crowd at my house for dinner, including my grandparents, aunt, uncle and two cousins. But this Thanksgiving it is different. My mom is coming home from China today. My mom is a patent lawyer and after a long, hard project that, to me, seemed to take a year, a trial in China was held. My mom was an essential part of this trial and had to be there. She was gone in China for about a week and a half and I was excited to pick her up because I missed her. By the time we picked up my mom it was about 7:30 at night, but we hadn’t had dinner yet. On the way home we stopped at McCormick and Schmick’s for our Thanksgiving dinner. The food was still good but it was nothing like my mom’s turkey and mashed potatoes. When my mom, dad, sister and I sat down at the white table-clothed table in the dark, not homey restaurant, I thought how truly blessed I am for my family. My mom was gone about a week and a half and my life was totally different during that time because my mom helps me a lot in my daily routine. There was no one to help me with my homework or make my lunch for school. All I could think about was that some kids don’t have parents and that I am so thankful for mine.

Pay attention

Today, I went to a music practice room in Squires to get myself back into piano after I took about 3 months off after my stressful senior recital at the end of the school year this past summer. I had to concentrate harder to play the music smoothly and playing wasn’t as natural as it was three months ago. Playing alone in a square room for no one is different than practicing at home for my family to listen to whether they want to or not. If someone asked what I had been doing for the past 45 minutes and I responded that I played the piano in a music room, they might think I was strange to sit alone. I’m not a music major, I’m not even taking a class in the department. So they might wonder why I just go to the practice rooms and play. The reason I do so is because I enjoy playing the piano; I do it for myself. It is an acquired talent that I worked hard at for 11 years and I don’t want to forget how to play. Because I didn’t have an audience while I was playing and I didn’t have a goal of a specific number of measure I needed to memorize for the day, I found myself day-dreaming. I thought about how I wasn’t doing my homework and how much I had to do that night and I thought about the Outdoor Club interest meeting I was about to attend after playing. But after I find myself day-dreaming for a minute while playing, I make my mind snap back to what it’s supposed to be doing and make myself pay attention to the piano.

Work

Everything that you put work into has an outcome or a beneficial result. For example, I can practice math every day and earn a 98% on the calculus test. But I could practice math every day and receive a 78% on the calculus test. These are both results but for the second calculus test, I received a grade that doesn’t seem so beneficial and I still didn’t practice math enough to perform at the highest standard on the test. I can work as a dentist from 9-5, 4 days a week and earn 106K per year. Or I could work as a factory from 7-9, 6 days a week and earn an hourly wage of $8. The factory worker works harder than the dentist but earns less income. But the dentist probably worked harder in school before he got his job than the factory worker, who might have not gone to college. The simplest example of work is when my body digests food, which takes work. My stomach churns and breaks down food to extract nutrients for energy to power by body. I use the energy I get from food to do work. These are all different ways work and results are completed.

Autobiography of Malcolm X vs. Superman and Me

Both Malcolm X and Sherman Alexie wrote Autobiography of Malcolm X and Superman and Me, respectively, for similar audiences. These stories are both directed at the white people that discriminated and degraded the colored people in the authors’ respective time periods. The white people believed colored people, both Native Americans and blacks, were stupid and could not be educated.  Malcolm X and Alexie directed their stories to similar audiences and likewise, their stories displayed similar purposes. Both Malcolm X and Alexie wrote their stories of how they became literate through self-education to refute and protest against the white people’s claim that colored people couldn’t be educated. While Malcolm X and Alexie’s stories have similar purposes and are directed at similar audiences, they wrote their stories with different voices. Malcolm X describes what he read in more detail than Alexie. For example, Malcolm X recites the events of Nat Turner’s rebellion and how the British white men took control of and colonized India, while Alexie only recites the genres he read. Malcolm X and Alexie also have a different tone behind their voices. Because Malcolm X recites all the diverse history he learned after he self-taught himself, one senses a boastful tone in his voice. In contrast, Alexie doesn’t recite all the interesting facts he learned from reading  in his story, which, compared to Malcolm X, doesn’t seem boastful. Alexie even says that he writes his stories in third person to make him and his personal achievement seem more modest. While Alexie and Malcolm X have similar purposes and audiences for their stories, they possess different voices in their writing.

Op-ed Review

In the article, Men, Who Needs Them?, the author, Greg Hampikian, informs his audience about the scientific breakthroughs of the possibility of a female becoming pregnant without a male. To do this, a “fresh or frozen” sperm from a “living or dead” donor is required.  But Hampikian uses this purpose to also make an underlying argument that the human population could technically continue without males with these breakthroughs and with the huge frozen sperm supply that could support the human population for generations. Hampikian’s intended audience is the everyday people that have an interest in science, but not the people rooted in the scientific community, as one may assume. This is because people very active in the scientific community would have probably heard about this advancement already or contributed to the research and development of this advancement themselves. This article is also not intended for the scientific community because the article was published in the New York Times, not a medical or science journal.  In the introduction, Hampikian has a serious tone because of the background information he dictates on the traits of the human and mammalian species. Later in the article, Hampikian’s tone can be seen as serious but underneath it is exaggerated. This is because Hampikian describes the process in detail of how a child is nourished only by a female from the child’s grandmother giving birth to the child’s mother to the mother giving birth to the child. In the description of the process, he mentions how little males contribute to child development compared to how much females scientifically contribute, both before and after the child’s birth. The article has an informative personality, yet a playful one since he tries to exaggerate how much females contribute to child development compared to males. There is also an unintended feminist personality because he states, “men [have] become less relevant to reproduction and parenting.”  The argument that the human population could technically survive without men due to the breakthroughs in science is effective and convincing because he uses scientific evidence and processes to support his claim. I believe that the article would convince the target audience, because the sociologists and the child development specialists in the scientific community that the article is not directed towards would disagree with Hampikian’s claim.

What do I value and how will I live?

I value hard work, friendship and knowledge and I will live wholeheartedly. I value hard work because it almost always leads to success. For example, I worked hard all throughout high school, balancing school work with extracurricular activities. Although the hard work in high school was just one step along the way, as will be college, it led me to VT, which will lead me to a successful career (hopefully). I also value hard work because it can bring both valuable knowledge and friendship. I value knowledge because I gain knowledge from experience and I make decisions based on past experience. For example, in my junior of high school, I took a challenging AP chemistry course because I wanted to major in a science field in college. But I didn’t do as well as I had liked to in the class. Because chemistry is a difficult subject and I felt like I hadn’t truly mastered the basic material yet, I made the decision to take chemistry again this semester to better solidify my knowledge of chemistry. I value knowledge as I do friendship. Friends are important in everyday life because they are people that are dependable, talk to you, laugh with you, and get you through the day. For example, the friends I made at VT help me get through the day because I can tell them how my day went as we go to dinner. I will live wholeheartedly because I will do my best and work hard in all of my endeavors. These endeavors can even include knowledge and friendship. I will work hard at VT to gain the knowledge that I need to succeed in a future career, while supporting and listening to my friends to maintain the friendship.
